Oye Gureje, is a Professor of Psychiatry and Director, WHO Collaborating Centre for Research and Training in Mental Health, Neuroscience and Substance Abuse, Department of Psychiatry, University of Ibadan. He is a member of the WHO International Advisory Group for the Revision of the International Classification of Diseases for Mental and Behavioural Disorders, Chairs the Working Group on Somatic Distress and Dissociative Disorders and Co-Chairs the Field Studies Coordinating Group. He Chairs the National Mental Health Action Committee, an advisory body to the Federal Ministry of Health. He is a former President of the Association of Psychiatrists in Nigeria and of the African Association of Psychiatrists and Allied Professionals. He has served as the Zonal Representative for Central and West Africa for the World Psychiatric Association, Member of the Ethics and Review Committee of the Association and is currently a Consultant to the Committee on Meetings.
He is an Associate Editor of the International Review of Psychiatry and of Epidemiology and Psychiatric Sciences and is on the Editorial Boards of several other journals, including Drug and Alcohol Dependence, Social Psychiatry and Psychiatric Epidemiology, Current Psychiatry Reports, Lancet Psychiatry, among others. A recipient of several honors, he was, in 2008, conferred with the highest national honor for academic achievement in Nigeria, the Nigerian National Order of Merit Award, for his contributions in medicine.
